Bridal Opulence

The Delhi Couture Week held last month proved that couture in India means opulence at its highest level and opulence in turn means that it is aimed at the bridal wear market. Designers outdid themselves in presenting some amazing craftsmanship as far as embellishments were concerned.

All indications pointed to creations that had to have drama and glamour in large doses. For the coming bridal season it is glitter, shimmer and the dazzle of crystals for everything. Fabrics move into the luxurious segment with lush velvets, silks, brocades, satins, lace and tulle. Zardozi, zari, aari and resham with all the sparkle that goes with it will make amazing embellishment statements.

The sari stays firm on the formal charts with the lehenga, choli, blouse, dupatta and jacket combinations getting layered into extravagant silhouettes. Gowns will surely float down the Red Carpet and also along the wedding aisles with fashionistas gliding in them. The colour story will be quite uncontrollable with every hue from pristine white to regal purple, seductive red, stunning green, bright yellow and orange, glittering gold and exotic black leading the rainbow march.

Each designer at the Delhi Couture Week presented a trend direction he or she wants the coming bridal season to revel. J J Valaya’s sharply cut gold jackets with lehengas are the new look which the brides would like to follow. Rohit Bal gave his creations some multi rings to create a futuristic story. Pallavi Jaikishan stayed true to her hand crafted sari and lehengas; while Sabyasachi Mukherjee went into patriotic mode with a mix of couture and kitsch combined with opulent embroidery and rich fabrics from around the country.

Manish Malhotra’s Bollywood glamour which was reflected on the ramp will make favoured celebrity appearances while Suneet Varma’s very feminine touches for the sari and ethnic wear will be rather unconventional. Varun Bahl’s Russian inspiration for bridal wear will make a striking statement next season and Gaurav Gupta’s unconventionally draped saris will gladden the fashionistas.

Bridal wear has never seen such grandeur as it will be evident during the 2010 wedding trousseau season.
