EARLY YEARS
Born in New Delhi, Dilip Kapur moved to Pondicherry at the age of six. He grew up in Sri Aurobindo Ashram and went to school in Phillips Academy Andover, Massachusetts. Dilip Kapur founded Hidesign in 1978. The brand today has over 50 stores in India and a presence in 23 countries.
EDUCATION
Kapur went on to attend the Princeton University, majoring in International Affairs and Economics at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He earned himself a bachelor’s and master’s degree, then went on to pursue a Ph.D. at the Social Science Foundation, part of Denver University in the US state of Colorado.
Hidesign
Dilip Kapur, President, began his life as an entrepreneur in 1978 with Rs 25,000. He used the money to purchase a sewing machine, some leather and a worker, all accommodated under a thatched-roof. The brand now has a Rs100 crore turnover and is a company of over 3,000. In 1985, John Lewis in UK was the first department store to carry the entire line of Hidesign leather goods. The company established its inaugural custom design factory in Pondicherry, India.
